With the recent release of the Crysis Demo, people have been playing with the included editor. After you play with it for a few hours, you can really see the endless possibilities. You can either load up a map, spawn a few guns, and about a 100 enemies, and have a crazy war. Or you can make your own map from scratch. Never fear, I will guide you through everything.
Installation
After you install the Crysis Demo, you have to find the map editor install file. Simply go here: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis SP Demo\Sandbox2 Installer and click the installer. Of course if you are running partitions or multiple hard drives, its possible for it to be in a different location other that "C." After it has installed, you have to find the file to run it. No... they don't put it on the desktop for you. But its ok, simply go here: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis SP Demo\Bin32. You will find the Sandbox EXE in there.
Basic Operation
I'm trying to explain this in extreme detail, so please don't get angry if I seem to be way below your level. Right now, just a blank grey screen should be open. You will want to open a map you can actually edit. So lets go to File>Open. Then open the island.cry file found in the island folder. Give it a few seconds to load the map. Even if the screen appears to be frozen, it will usually "come alive" after a few seconds. This is a whole map you are loading. Once the map comes up, you will see some error messages. These aren't your fault, it is just because the demo doesn't have all the textures. So you can close that. The basic movement keys are WASD, just like the game, and to rotate the screen, you right click and then move the mouse around. (Sorry MAC owners lol). Once you have mastered this, lets find a nice place to set up some stuff. Fly close to the ground, but make sure you are not actually under it, then press CTRL + G. This will make the game live. Walk around, get comfortable. Once you have explored a little bit, you can press ESC to go back to editor mode. You have now mastered the basic skills needed in operating this editor. Now for something fun.
Spawning Items
Please note that this is the demo, and all items may not be available. Lets summon a TAC gun. Yes, the best gun ever, it shoots a nuke. So start by finding the rollup bar. It should be on the right side of the screen by default. If it is not that, go to "View" and make sure it is clicked. Now to find the item in this complex menu. First click Entity>Items>Then double click Tac Gun. Now you should see a model with an X,Y,Z axis coming off of it. Simply place it where you want it to go and click. Now enter live mode (CTRL+G). If you did it right, you should be able to pick up the gun. You know you want to shoot it, but make sure you aim Faaaar away.
Spawning Koreans And Aliens.
I assume you know how to spawn things after reading the above, so I am simply going to tell you how to find the Koreans. First of all know that Archetype Entity is the menu you want to use if you want to summon an enemy with A.I. So click Archetype Entity > Asian_new > Camper Camp. Now be careful here, because not all the options can be used. Only the models for the "Light" kind work, such as "Light_Pistol" or my favorite "Light_SMG_Law." Feel free to place as many down as you want and have an epic battle. To summon the aliens simply go to: Archtype Entity>Aleins>Scouts and any of those work in the Demo.
Having Fun with a Tornado
This is probably is the best. When you summon it, it will tear up everything, truly showing the power of this engine. To summon this, just go to Entity > Environment > Tornado.
Summoning Helicopters, Boats, Tanks and more
Simply go to Entity > Vehicles > and then find what you want.
How can I place stuff around the level and then play it?
This is simple. I will make it too simple actually. First place everything you want, then to start the game, look up in the sky. You will see a grey box from far away, but as you come closer to it, you will notice its an airplane. Simply go inside it, or near it, or even ontop of it, and then when you press CTRL+G, the first cut scene of the game will start, and it wil be like you just started the game. The only hard part is trying to find all the goodies you placed around. Or maybe defeating the 100 person army?
Can I play past the end of the demo?
Hm.. I'm glad you asked. You can actually, for a few minutes. Simply find the frozen boat in the map editor, and go past the boat. Then start the game... you will witness the alien kill a few Koreans.
